Message Not having a turbo, I might be talking a little out my ass here, but the only reason you should consider getting BOV's (besides the sound) is if you're overloading the stock recirculation valves. The only way you're going to do that is by running some bigger turbos with higher boost.

Recirculation valves are a better concept because they keep the air that has already passed the MAS in the system rather than venting it to the atmosphere. This is important because the computer is delivering fuel to the engine with the assumption that the air it just registered passing the MAS is still on it's way to the engine. The backfire you're talking about occurs because the air was not there, and full combustion did not take place in the cylinder. The leftover fuel ignites at the exhaust tail where it finally meets the oxygen it needs to burn.

Both recirculation and blow off valves will prolong the life of your turbos.
